Currently pursuing her MFA at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, ceramic artist Alwyn O’Brien (Salt Spring Island, BC) was the first recipient of the One of a Kind Show/Gardiner Museum Emerging Artist Award in 2007. Mini Bio With roots going back to India, but born in Winnipeg, Farha has always been cold. During many chilly nights in Edmonton where she spent her childhood, Farha would be bundled in her woolies drawing and coloring. Years later, in Detroit, she studied art so she could make beautiful objects, and also earned a Bachelor of Science in apparel and textile design from Michigan State. This focus on fibres was her calling, so she moved to Vancouver to study in the advanced textile arts program at Capilano College. Afterwards, she realised her true mission was to felt Montreal, where she moved in 2002, and became a member of the Long Hall collective the following year. She has been decorating and covering people in wool in this wintery city ever since, with an assortment of clothing, accessories, and bags, and is slowly covering the inside of homes too, with her new felted rugs.
